Reflection 01-03-09 09:40am EST

According to my facebook status I've been "reflecting" for the past few days. I'll be 30 years old next year and it's high time that I start doing the things that my body will soon be too old to do. I'm talking of course about body building, professional football, and things like the winter olympics etc...

But seriously I've finally started cooking a few nights a week. I've tried to stop making excuses for why I don't know how to cook. I was recently informed by a co-worker of mine that you can marry just about any girl if you know how to build a house and cook. I've been building things for over 10 years but my knowledge in the kitchen is just embarrassing. I have a lot to learn, even when it comes to the grill.

Secondly, I resolve to visit a chiropractor and map out a plan to make some adjustments to my spine. Like my 6 month teeth cleaning at the dentist I have neglected it for too long. I can't let in get any worse if I'm to ever accomplish the above mentioned goals.

Finally, reflection has caused me to think that moving to Columbus, GA was definitely not in my plans this time last year. It really makes me wonder what God has in store for me in 2009. I pray whatever comes that faith and perseverance will win the day.

Hope you made some resolutions this year too. I'd love to hear about them if you did.

maucknot

Yeah, eating out gets old!

rica5219

well I hope that 2009 doesn't lead you to move from Columbus! We should hang out more...that is if you think we're cool enough to hang out with... I mean I know I am.... :) haha.

sunnylee

I got to visit w/ you Mom and Stepdad on Wed night! I had NO idea that Chris had two little ones!!!

beckylboyer

Good for you for learning to cook. My sister says it should be easy if you have a receipe. But I've had receipes many times that didn't turn out quite right. And thanks for the nice comments about my kids. I know that's all I write about but I'm keeping the record for me and hoping I don't scare all my friends away. I'm glad some of them are funny. :) And I'm really happy for you that you are enjoying your new home.

shadow

I'm glad someone caught the Kung Foo Panda reference. I made some rockin hamburgers on the 1st while the rest of the family was eating black-eyed peas.

rica5219

you are a heathen... and thanks for that- loners, stragglers...rightttt- more like kids who have to work! haha. If I had known you were in Columbus we totally would have had a party!

DessertDiva

Watch Food Network - it's inspiring.

lw

I am dealing with a few health issues that hopefully will be resloved by a strick eating plan. As much as I am dreading this new eating lifestyle I know I must stick to it in order to feel my best. I know it would be hard to take care of little ones (which we would like in the near future!) feeling like I do right now. I am reminded of a story you told me once about your dad. I remember he got diabites and you told me how he got up and exercised everyday. You were so amazed at his drive to feel good and how he knew this was just what he HAD to do. You also told me how he would recite Bible verses on his runs. Not sure if you remember that story, but it is a good one to remember. Even things like cooking and taking better care of yourself (me included) can be accomplished through God. Brad and I have been praying daily for strength and courage that I can do this new eating plan well :) Happy New Year!

nancyjo

Happy New Year Josh! I think you are correct in realizing God is in control. Even when we don't understand why things happen the way they do, usually it eventually makes sense and then we can say "so that is why God made things happen that way"!

jimandtyra

Women do like a man that can cook. I think my husband cooked more often and much better than I did when we were both single. I've come around, though.

Maybe you and Robbie could swap recipes.

jess

Funny coincidence! Yeah, my back bothers me sometimes, and has ever since I worked at Sam's back in college. We had to do some lifting, and my back's never seemed right since. So going to the chiro. has crossed my mind at times, but I'm just a little leary. I've heard so many success stories, and I'm a really naturally-minded person, so I don't know what my problem is. I think I just have trust issues! :P

email

Ha! I just told my mom today that I was going to try a chiropractor! It makes me feel old...

crazy_mama

I gotta say there is something about having a guy make dinner for you! Good luck on that. I'm sure you won't regret being able to cook even if you aren't the best at it!

mjintexas

Guys that cook are indeed hot. Building a house = hotter. Your friend is dead on.

kcrxgirl

Learning how to make at least a few dishes is a good idea. Someday when you're married, your wife will come home from a long day and just not feel like cooking. And you'll be able to say to her "Don't worry about it, I'll cook tonight." And you will be her hero! :)

stylinmama

Good luck with learning how to cook! I am determined to teach my son how to cook because it's so true that a future wife will definitely appreciate that! I hate 6 month dental cleanings, it takes all my willpower not to cancel them when they come around. Happy New Year!

elizabethb

hope you had a great time here in CO. too bad we couldn't get together for a fun filled evening of hand and foot!! Maybe next time :) I just had my 30th bday, and is wierd leaving the 20's behind and starting a new decade! I need to greatly improve my kitched skills as well! :)

This song will be stuck in your head now too :) 12-15-08 07:32am EST

Bells will be ringing... this sad sad New Years... oh what a christmas, to have the blues...

I'm taking some time off work a heading home to Colorado Springs. I'll be leaving the slightly less awesome state of Georgia tomorrow afternoon and not returning til Dec. 27th.

Hope your christmas is white and not blue.

whipsmile

I love that Christmas song!!

safe travels!

sheliandbrettsmom

be careful and enjoy!

amyrea23

yay! maybe we will get to see you while you are here.

email

Yeah Colorado!

ryanandnancy

Have a happy holiday!

kimbond

I guess you will have a white Christmas

kittyhawk

Colorado is definitely "white". Have a safe trip & welcome back to beautiful Colorado!!

flychic

Have a good trip!

shadders05

Let us know if you are going to be up this way. . . :)

rica5219

Have fun in Colorado!!!!!!

mjintexas

I would have to know the song to have it stuck in my head. Muahahahah.

rica5219

we'll discuss this at church... but I know you want to go shopping with me... don't lie.

maucknot

absolutely, but the mint sets in plastic (which my dad gives me every year) will be worth much more because they are absolutely in mint condition. Your collection will be worth hundreds of dollars one day.

tickets

Is your baby gone? You have no friends? I'll wish you a Merry Christmas once again! ;o)

Missed seeing you in Auburn! :o(

NPR 11-21-08 07:30am EST

I can usually tolerate NPR's doom and gloom reports of the econmic crisis and all the talk of the failures in the Bush administration but I think my filter is getting dirty. This morning I heard the 15 year "forecast" of our nation and could not believe what the experts are saying. Unemployment on the rise, world influence dwindling to nothing, and the US no longer being THE world power.

It's time to start listening to something else for a while. I like to stay informed but not at the cost of ruining my day. I'm thankful to have a job during this hard time and I pray that God will use His servants everywhere to show kindness to those who are not as fortunate.

sunnylee

I would have to agree w/ the US not being the world power...my vote goes to China...sorry to be so gloomy. But ...look at this ..those darn Democrats feed the public so much drama and junk to make them feel insecure and stupid so that the people (the uneducated, the poor and the helpless) will depend on the government and only the government.

sunnylee

course...trying preaching that to kids who have been raised on this junk food from the media, the government, and their parents

beckylboyer

I understand. I listed to talk raido a lot during the election but I'm done now. No since listening to them talk about how our president will tank. If he tanks we all tank so I'm not sure why they are so gleeful about that!

whipsmile

although, thinking that the US will remain THE world power is foolish. History proves that.

but, yeah, listen to something else.

sheliandbrettsmom

good points. Like anyone knows 15 years in the future...we can't even get tomorrow's weather forecast right half the time!

happinessisthelord

amen!

stylinmama

Well said.

kcrxgirl

Even if it happens to be true, I don't want to hear about it every day! How depressing! The irony of it is, part of the reason Obama won is b/c he gave people a sense of hope, even if it turns out to be a false one.

maucknot

I like her too :).

kimbond

I stopped listening to NPR just for that reason, there monotone voices freak my out

abigail

thanks for your thoughts, Josh! How are you and how goes everything?

abigail

one of the nicest things about marrying when a little older is the difference in maturity. the things that mattered more when younger aren't a big deal now. (as you can attest:) also it makes you perhaps a more appreciate of what you got...b/c you have a tad more wisdom :)

abigail

oh, and yeah, the elk were everywhere! i thought of you while we were there since you are a Colorado boy!

maucknot

Thanks for your help with the pizza last night...every piece was devoured!!

a_starr

I recently gave up watching Good Morning America as I got ready in the morning. Couldn't take the political propaganda. Now I watch HGTV or SportsCenter in the morning instead. :)

rica5219

heyheyhey!!!!!!

Is Your Life Awesome? 11-18-08 06:12pm EST

I’m not sure who invented the wheel or who it was the first sliced bread but I know that their discoveries have changed the world. Every man desires to contribute something needful to the world. Some people are not as selfless in their ambitions as others but the desire is there nonetheless. I didn’t take part in discovering flight, I’ve never walked on the moon. I’ve never inspired millions through a speech or writing a book and I've never been to Boston in the fall. Perhaps you’ve not done any of these things either but something tells me that raising children might be the adventure that fulfills this desire for many of us.

Mystery, anticipation, failure, and frustration what greater adventure is there. The challenges and rewards the tears and the chores it's all part of an experience that brings fulfillment. Someone once told me that when we grow old and feeble in mind we spend our time longing for peace of mind. We desire to be convinced that our lives have affected other peoples lives for the better and that our lives haven’t been spent in selfishness and foolishness. This is a natural desire even for the most wicked of people. And so my choice... she’s a clear one, I need to have children or invent something really awesome.

Three cheers to all of you who choose to do both!

wilbur

Have you ever thrown your mashed potatoes up against the wall? I've never been to Boston in the fall either, but I did go in the summer once.

I feel you on this stuff. I'm about ready to have some babies too.

maucknot

Yes, would not swap raising children for anything. But remember, a wife comes first!!

nancyjo

Having children IS inventing something really awesome!

joe

I vote for a world changing invention :)

beckylboyer

Thanks for the reminder about the importance of what we do. I know it but sometimes feel others don't. :)

alowe

huh, so true! i've never thought of it that way, but it makes perfect sense. i hope you are enjoying your new home!

sunnylee

well you since you physically CAN'T have children..you might want to go w/ inventing something really awesome! ;-)

sararhoton

I'm with her! :)

Chick Flicks and Such 11-14-08 09:32am EST

Have you ever talked to someone out of obligation? I sometimes feel like there are curtain people who under different circumstances I wouldn't be the slightest bit interested in talking with them. It's very difficult not only to keep the conversation going but especially to actually listen to what they're saying in response.

If I asked the question shouldn't I at least be focused long enough to listen to the answer? What's wrong with me? I feel so terrible when I act interested but really my motives are sometimes selfish and most times alterior.

Jane Austen's charactor in the story of Emma is a good example of what I mean. Emma was a person who thought it her responsibility to fix other peoples social inadequacies.

And no I didn't read the book... I watched the movie. :) Remember... to loose manly points is to gain brownie points.

Happy Friday to all and to all a Happy Weekend!!!

whipsmile

I know what you are talking about, there is a serious lack of plain ol' manners in this as well. The saying is true, "Are you someone who listens, or are you someone who just waits for their turn to speak."

there's a lot to that.

maucknot

Thanks for talking to me solely out of obligation; I never would have known this had it not been for this post :). Don't be ashamed about "chick flicks" -- if they tell a good story and are clean, it's okay. Some chick will love you for it. And I might just have one in mind for you.

shadow

the question is, who awarded said brownie points?

robbio

"to lose manly points is to gain brownie points" only works in the endgame. Try that junk in the opening and you end up with no manly points and nobody around to make brownies either.

superstar12

I'm the same way sometimes. I've been trying really hard lately to change my bad habits. I'll let you know if it works. = )

superstar12

Campaign costs from the election.

butterflyhomerachel

Ha Ha Ha! Josh, I love your saying, "To lose manly points.." That is REALLY funny--and true. I understand what you are saying. I often don't know how to make small talk of any significance or interest.

tu_madre

hey no worries, man. i've watched emma as well.

acurtis

I'm gonna have to share the man points theory with Adam. His buddies at work are always taking "man points" away from him for various reasons...some of which I'm sure you can guess, since most of them are not Christians. But he even lost man points for buying Claire a playground when we live right by a park...anyway, too much info I am sure...I know exactly what you mean about talking to people and really not being interested. I find myself looking right past them at other people and their conversations...it's so rude. I have actually been making a concerted effort to stop lately.

maucknot

Did not have her in mind!

happinessisthelord

you should watch Pride and Predjudice next... sigh. Or the Love Comes Softly series (ha). I think it would do every man good to watch and learn from movies that have awesome male characters that every woman appreciates!\

maucknot

Tomorrow!

yo

maucknot

This is Sheri...she is 15 yrs younger than her husband...;) I love the one Tony mentioned today. We have had fun at our house today saying Vandeneinden. What a cool last name!

sheliandbrettsmom

Funny! Sheli is reading Emma right now. Oh and did I spell your name correctly?

yo

so you would watch it:) it has a good bit about learning to listen in it.

maucknot

Thank you for what you did on Sunday. It greatly encouraged me.

sunshinelc

Really? Well thank you. Btw. you wouldn't have gotten into trouble. :-)
