Going camping for Thanksgiving, and the end of an era 11-21-08 11:05am CST
Marla and Crystal 1983Marla and Crystal 2004

God willing, we're going camping next week, as we have done almost every year for the last quarter century. Kelia has been the main planner and executrix of this do (it now is an event in Capital Letters), and has decided to let this be the last year. Her letter to participants from prior years in toto, but slightly rearranged:

I am looking forward to seeing as many of y'all as can be with us for Thanksgiving next week at Double Lake, God willing!

I look forward to this time with great fondness.

The Double Lake Thanksgiving tradition was begun by Steve and Shirley Maurer in 1983 when Crystal was less than 2, Marla was 2 and Kennon was 5. From 3 families gathered around a campfire the tradition has swelled to many, many more families--sometimes more than 100 folks on Thanksgiving Day each year with 40 or 50 of us camping together. It's been a BLAST!

What has made this time most special to me and my family is the time I've had with folks like YOU. If you have been able to be with us at Thanksgiving, then YOU are what Marla affectionately terms our "Thanksgiving family".

But I just wanted to give y'all the heads-up that this will be the LAST YEAR I coordinate the Double Lake Thanksgiving Campout.

If anyone would like to step up to the plate and take over the coordinating, I'm pleased to work with him/her for 2009, as God wills. However, I need to know ASAP--absolutely no later than Thanksgiving Day!

The Lodge reservations have to be made the day after Thanksgiving first-come-first-served. Other groups have almost reserved the space ahead of us in years past, so timing is critical. Group Site F has to be reserved absolutely the first day it comes available (time varies from year to year) for the same reason.

Some sort of T'giving Campout newsletter and set of emails are put out the first part of October to prepare folks for the event.

The paper goods and other incidentals are then bought the last few weeks before Thanksgiving.

Other parts of the tradition that are not critical but are done include printing signs to direct folks, bringing hymnals for our singings, bringing the archival photo albums and taking pix of all attendees for them, being sure coffee is made, tables are set up and covered with tablecloths and other incidentals.

I've thoroughly enjoyed doing this job but it's time to pass it on to someone else, if there is anyone else who wants to do it. If not, then this wonderful tradition needs to be part of the past after this year.

I don't do changes very well, but the older I get, I realize trying to not change is like trying to tie down the wind. That's not going to happen! We have a few hurricanes in recent years to remind us of that.

I'm so thankful that GOD never changes. Praise to Him!

Thank you for helping to make these Thanksgivings so precious in my/our memories.

And, according to His gracious will, may GOD bless the Double Lake Thanksgiving Campout 2008!

sharonI certainly do understand now being the time to give it up. Those were some really good times we had with you guys!!
marlaThis makes me sad, but I really am okay with it. And the fact that I'm okay with it kind of makes me sad, too, since it's the only holiday tradition that I've ever gotten really into. Oh well. Life changes. Who knows what will be by next November anyway! If the Lord allows us to live until then.
diannesGetting my lists together and finding all the camping gear! Woohoo, I am looking forward to seeing you guys!
tgatzajrWOO HOO! Sounds like fun times again! Hope you guys have a good time!

Google to add 10 million Life images 11-19-08 07:55am CST
From an article in Computerworld:

Google today said that it plans to archive as many as 10 million photos and digitized images from the Life magazine archives. Some of the images date back to the 1750s, and many have never been published.

Google today announced that it will add the images from Life photographers to its Google Image Search pages. Only a small percentage of the images -- including newly digitized images from photos and etchings -- have even been published, Google said in a blog post. The rest have been "sitting in dusty archives in the form of negatives, slides, glass plates, etchings, and prints," Google said.

Read the rest of the article here.

adamandjessesdadLooks like a good way to occupy a lot of time!
mikejohnsontxIs this your picture of the week?
trxno, it was Margaret Bourke-White's photo of the Fort Peck Dam, and was the cover image on the first issue of Life magazine - an absolutely iconic image for that reason.
adampualthat sounds like a fun job for those engineers...at least they get to look at cool photos all day!
tgatzajrThat would really be interesting! I have got a lot of use out of their digitized books.

joeHey, sorry I'm missing you guys this morning. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. I'm holed up with a bit of a migraine. Will be there either tonight or Wed.
