This is something near and dear to me... my business and many many other WAHM's (work at home mom's) may be out of business come February '09. When I first heard about this I thought, nah, can't be true. But as the weeks pass and I hear more and more about this I'm getting a little worried. The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Congress have just passed a law which requires ALL MAKERS of children's products in the US and importing to the US to have their products (and components) tested by a CPSC-certified, Third-party testing laboratory FOR LEAD CONTENT. On Feb 10, 2009, all businesses which do not comply with said testing (which is incredibly expensive and unnecessary for textiles as fabric does not contain lead) will be in violation of federal law, guilty of selling banned products and subject to fines and jail time. This affects so many. WAHMs, Etsy sellers, crafters, wooden and organic toy companies, baby carriers, ect. On Feb 10th, the handcrafted movement dies. WAHMs are out of business. The economy sinks even lower. I like the idea of not paying for heat until November though. However, when it comes to cooling time of the year, I pay for liking a cool place. I have to compromise and allow it to be warmer than I would prefer.
